Are you an emotional eater?

Here are some tips for the emotional eater.

Everyone has 4 basic hunger centers in the brain:
You have an appetite for food, water, sex and sleep.

If you don't get enough sleep, you will crave carbohydrates. So, try to get into good sleeping habits. Get atleast 8hrs of sleep a night. Also, get on a set schedule to fall asleep at a certain time and wake at a certain time. I usually will fall asleep around 9:30-10:00 and I wake up between 7 and 9am. Find times that work for you and stick with it, you will notice a difference and you won't feel as tired.

The key is, you never want to be hungry. Therefore, you need to eat every 3-4 hours smaller ammounts each time. Before you get hungry, eat.

Some small snack ideas:
Yogurt & a banana
OR Oatmeal w/cinnamon
OR a little bit of salmon and broccoli
A salad
OR some apples with cheese or peanut butter

Mental craving only last maybe 10, 15-20 minutes.
Replace those minutes with an activity to distract yourself. If your reaching for a weight loss goal, then workout, go for a run, ride your bike, dance, or engage in an activity that will stimulate your brain such as a sudoku puzzle or crossword puzzle.

Also, rather than indulging in foods to mask your feelings, try to think about what were you feeling, thinking, sensing right before that craving.

Replace those mini-cravings with a small wafer piece of 75%-100% cocoa chocolate or a spoonful of applesauce.

When you crave salt, DRINK WATER FIRST, because when you crave salty snacks, your often dehydrated. Pickles are a good alternative, a small bowl of popcorn (get the 100 calorie bags), Almonds are great for you as well as satisfying your salty craving.

Best of luck to you and remember you can do anything you put your mind to, it might seem hard at first, but start small and work your way up to healthy eating habits. Your body will be thanking you later.

Makeup - It can hurt your beauty in the long run!

Ladies, I know how much you love your makeup! The truth is there are some silent killers in the makeup you might be using. The good news is, there ARE alternatives! I just watched an old Dr. Oz show that I had in my DvR & never watched until today. Boy, am I glad I watched it today! Here are some things you should know:

The FDA does not approve makeup before it hits the shelf.

The scary part is cosmetic companies are not legally obligated to list harmful byproducts that may occur during manufacturing.

The cosmetic industry requires no guidelines for terms such as "natural," organic," or "hypoallergenic," so don't be fooled! The terms they use can mean anything they want them to mean.

Makeup puts us in contact with about 126 chemicals daily and many of them have not been tested.

SO, Here are the 3 beauty products Dr. Oz wants you to avoid. I also explained why you need to avoid it AND listed the alternatives that Dr. Oz suggested!

Most Deadly
1.Avoid: Mineral Powder.
Why: Can scar your lungs, causes inflammation and possible Fibrosis.
Alternatives: Liquid Based foundation with shimmer
Cream blush or bronzer
Pressed powder

2. Avoid: Anti-wrinkle creams
Why: Penetrates the skin quickly, goes down into the blood vessels & can cause inflammation and allergies. It can also cause collagen breakdown and more wrinkles.*dont believe any claims that are "botox-like" or claims to be Instant wrinkle remover*
Alternative: The most effective anti-wrinkle cream will be fragrance free, color free and will have the right supplements: Vitamin A (Retinol), Vitamin C and Alpha Hydroxy Acid.

3. Avoid: Lipgloss
Why: Comes from petroleum jelly, which is like drinking gasoline! Scary, isn't it!When it goes on your lips, it's absorbed and it's like your actually eating it. Could cause cancer depending on whether it's pure or not, who knows if it's pure!
Alternatives: Look for gloss with Zinc Oxide, Try gloss made from beeswax, and wear sunscreen on your lips before applying any lipgloss.

You will NEVER look at dinner the same!

On Oprah today, she had Director Robert Kenner on talking about his documentary "Food inc."

"Food, Inc. examines Director Robert Kenner explores the subject from all angles, talking to authors, advocates, farmers, and CEOs, like co-producer Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma), Gary Hirschberg (Stonyfield Farms), and Barbara Kowalcyk, who's been lobbying for more rigorous standards since E. coli claimed the life of her two-year-old son. The filmmaker takes his camera into slaughterhouses and factory farms where chickens grow too fast to walk properly, cows eat feed pumped with toxic chemicals, and illegal immigrants risk life and limb to bring these products to market at an affordable cost. If eco-docs tends to preach to the converted, Kenner presents his findings in such an engaging fashion that Food, Inc. may well reach the very viewers who could benefit from it the most: harried workers who don't have the time or income to read every book and eat non-genetically modified produce every day. Though he covers some of the same ground as Super-Size Me and King Korn, Food Inc. presents a broader picture of the problem, and if Kenner takes an understandably tough stance on particular politicians and corporations, he's just as quick to praise those who are trying to be responsible--even Wal-Mart, which now carries organic products. That development may have more to do with economics than empathy, but the consumer still benefits, and every little bit counts. --Kathleen C. Fennessy "

Every little bit does count! Especially if you care about your health. People today, INCLUDING ME, want things fast. It's just "Easier" it seems. BUT as Director Kenner mentioned on Oprah, Would you rather spend a little extra money on HEALTHY food, or spend less on food but MORE IN DOCTOR BILLS? I don't think so!! We're back!! Reps & Protein

I know it's been forever since we have posted here on Healthy You. But now we're back and ready to inform you on great health issues that will help you in becoming healthy and strong for long.

One thing I'd like to talk about now is the importance of HOW to do excercise. When you work out a certain part of your body, for example legs: Do about 3 10-15 repetitions to start. Meaning do 10 leg lifts, take a 45-60 sec break, Do 10 more, take a break...and so on.

After a work out, make sure you digest some protein (Protein shake or Bar) I prefer a tasty protein shake from the gym, but if you can make your own, that's fine too, this way your muscles won't be killing you the next day! Protein also fills you up enough, so that you won't be hungry. Therefore, promoting weight loss!

Have a Healthy & Happy Day.....I hope this info helps you to become healthier!

Forget about New Years Resolutions!

I want to share with you a bit of advice my Dad recently gave me.

OK, We know that people usually set "New Year's Resolutions." However, I will tell you NOT to. New year's resolutions tend to cause resistance. For example, many times I intend to do something or I'll make a new years resolution and it just never turns out as planned.

When things don't turn out as we would have liked, we tend to feel disappointed in ourselves, guilty, stressed or depressed about it. These overwhelming feelings are not healthy! Instead of making a New Years Resolution, make a Preference (as my Dad calls it). This way you won't be so disappointed if it doesn't work out exactly how you'd like it too. Now, this doesn't mean don't make any changes for the new year, you can STILL work towards a specific goal for the new year, but you won't be so attached to a result or outcome that you imagined. If it doesn't work out, that's okay, don't beat yourself up over it. Just set the preference, work towards your goal and whatever happens it's ok! You will be happier and healthier for setting a preference and reaching for your goals.

I wish you all a very Happy New Year!
